How to add an M3U or Xtream Codes playlist

Your IPTV provider gives you either an M3U address or an Xtream Codes account (server, user and password). Either works in OndalyTV, on Windows, Android TV and Android phones and tablets. This guide shows both, how to get the programme guide (EPG) and what to do when something fails. If what you have is your own Jellyfin, Emby or Plex server, see the Jellyfin and Plex guides (links below).

M3U or Xtream Codes?

  • M3U / M3U8: a single web address that usually ends in .m3u or .m3u8, or contains get.php?username=...
  • M3U file: a .m3u or .m3u8 file saved on the device. Choose Type "M3U file" and pick it; this works on Windows and on phones and tablets, not on TVs, which have no file picker.
  • Xtream Codes: three pieces of information, a server address (often with a port, such as http://provider.example:8080), a user and a password. It gives the best results: categories for films and series, posters and the guide come with it.
  • If your provider gives you both, choose Xtream Codes.

Add an M3U playlist

  1. On the "Add a playlist" screen (or Settings › Sources › Add), leave Type on "M3U / M3U8 URL".
  2. Name: optional, so you can tell your playlists apart.
  3. Playlist URL: paste or type your provider's address exactly, including http:// or https://.
  4. EPG URLs: optional. Leave it empty if you do not have one (see the guide section below).
  5. Press "Add Source". Channels, films and series appear in their sections.

Add an Xtream Codes account

  1. Choose Type "Xtream Codes".
  2. Host: the server address with its port, as your provider wrote it (for example http://provider.example:8080).
  3. Username and Password: exactly as given, capitals included.
  4. Press "Add Source". The programme guide is picked up from the provider by itself.

The programme guide (EPG / XMLTV)

  • With Xtream Codes the guide comes from the provider automatically.
  • With M3U, if the playlist announces its guide in the header (url-tvg), OndalyTV finds it by itself.
  • If your channels still show no programme, ask your provider for the XMLTV guide address and paste it in "EPG URLs" (one per line) when adding the playlist, or later in Settings › Sources.
  • Channels match their guide through the tvg-id in the playlist; channels without it show no programme.

Common problems

  • "The provider answered with an error: HTTP 401/403/404": the address, user or password is wrong, or the subscription has expired. Check them with your provider.
  • "The provider is limiting requests (HTTP 429)": too many requests in a short time. Wait a minute and try again.
  • "The provider sent an answer that could not be read": the address opens a web page instead of a playlist. Check that it is the playlist address, not your provider's website.
  • A channel does not play or has no sound: try another player in Settings › Playback (on Android: ExoPlayer, VLC or Compatibility). Some channels are only available for a few hours.
  • To test the app without your playlist, use "Try a demo playlist" on the first screen.
